I need a reset

Anyone else? I recently listened to Rachel Hollis’ Rise podcast, she did a whole episode on how to start your day by jumping out of bed with joy. (You can click the link and it will take you to the exact episode.) Jumping out of bed? With joy? Yeah, not my cup of tea. Let me explain what my morning routine looks like.

For starters, I set three alarms: 6:00 am, 6:30 am (this one so I can make sure my 14-year-old son makes it out the door at 6:37. By this I mean I yell from under the covers in bed in my dark bedroom), and then finally at 6:45 am, where I hit snooze until 7:00 am. If you listen to Rachel’s podcast, you will learn that you’re NOT supposed to do that. She recommends waking up at least two hours before you actually need to be anywhere and make it your time. Most people, like me right now, wait until the evening for their time. That’s like leaving your leftovers for yourself every single day. Supposedly, that’s not good.

Another thing I do every morning: I give myself a fantastic “pep talk.” Well, actually, I scrunch up my belly fat and jiggle it while telling myself how disgusting I am. I’m not even joking; I seriously do that. Every morning.

Which is why I need a reset.

Philippians 4:8 “Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable–if anything is excellent or praiseworthy–think about such things.”

Ah, my friends. I think this is what Rachel Hollis was trying to teach me yesterday through her podcast. She said get up two hours early and start your day with joy. NOT snoozing and self-loathing. This may mean a gratitude journal, exercise, prayer, whatever suits your fancy. Just make sure it’s positive.

Maybe tomorrow I will wake up 90 minutes earlier and do a little writing and prayer to start my day and leave out the scrunched up belly in the mirror part. Yeah, I think I can do that.*
